My free settlers

Michael Barrett and Ellen Barrett (nee Rourke) were originally from Ireland. Michael arrived in VDL as a foot soldier with the 40th Regiment in 1824 on board the ship Phoenix. Ellen and their 3 eldest children (Catherine, John & Edward) arrived in 1825 on board Lady East. When Michael de-mobbed in 1833 they settled in the Esperance area.

Mary Lowen (nee Clarke) and her daughter Elizabeth arrived in 1826 on board Hugh Crawford. They came from Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire to join Mary’s father and ex-convict John Clarke who had settled at Tea Tree, and now owned land with a house and a thriving farm. She married ex-convict Henry Phillips.

Catherine Hand(s) came from London. She was a 16-year-old girl from the Chelsea School of Reform and arrived on the Princess Royal in 1832, as one of 200 female settlers. Princess Royal was the first female emigrant ship to be sent to VDL. She married ex-convict Alexander McKay and settled at Peppermint Bay (Woodbridge).

Peter and Alice Good (nee Good) and their two eldest children (William and Mary) arrive in 1837 on board Bussorah Merchant from Macroom, Co. Cork, Ireland. They settled in Franklin.

Frederick Wells and Sarah Wells (nee Connell), originally from England arrived in 1841 on board Egyptian. He was a foot soldier with the 96th regiment and they followed the regiment around VDL from Port Arthur to Launceston until he de-mobbed 1849 and settled in Hobart. When Sarah died in 1851, Frederick and his four daughters re-settled in the gold fields around Castlemaine, Victoria. Only their eldest child, Richard Thomas Wells remained in Tasmania and settled at Woodbridge.

Rev. John Welpley Lindsay arrived in 1850 on board Blenhein as the religious instruction for the convicts onboard. He was originally from Bandon, Co. Cork Ireland and his wife, Anne Lindsay (nee Splaine) arrived in 1852 with six of their children (John, Richard, Eliza, Catherine, Maria & Anne) on board Anna Maria. They had a short time on Norfolk Island in 1852/3 before settling in Hobart (Battery Point).

Lewis and Ann Perry (nee Linnett) from Essex, England arrived in 1855 on board Whirlwind. They departed from Plymouth with 5 children; three of there children died at Plymouth, when the ship was being repaired and another died on the voyage. Only Harry survived the journey.  They settled in the Port Sorell-Sassafras area.

Sarah Hill came from London. She arrived on immigrant ship Oriental in 1857 and was immediately assigned as nursemaid to a household in Broadmarsh. Four months later she married ex-convict Robert Lenton and settled in the Pontville-Brighton area.
